The Role

Within the Small Options Homes and Supported Apartment, Volunteer Live In Support Companions play a important role in the enhancement of services to our clients.

The volunteer aspect of this role has allowed our clients the opportunity to develop supportive, yet casual relationships with the Live In Person. Within this relationship the client can also rely upon this person to communication important information to MCHA professional support staff when necessary.

Generally, this living arrangement does not differ from any shared accommodation. Day to day responsibilities and tasks are shared, social or recreational activities can be carried out together and friends and family members are welcomed for visits. Both the Client and the Live-In are encouraged to create a comfortable home.

The Benefits

Live In Support Companions benefit from this living arraignment in a variety of ways:

  • Opportunity to gain valuable experience and knowledge of the field of Mental Health with regular exposure to clients and professionals
  • Schedules which allow participants to maintain outside employment or studies.
  • Opportunity to receive free accommodation in a comfortable apartment or home and a monthly honorarium in recognition of the support offered
  • Opportunity for casual employment within MCHA's various services
  • Opportunity to develop a close relationship with an individual who requires support, but is also able to provide valuable insight into the challenge of living with a disability

The Live-In positions available through the programs of Metro Community Housing Association have proven to be of great benefit to the individuals who hold these position, the client's to whom they offer their services and to the various professional support persons involved.
